The Noosa District Rugby League was founded in 1975 and based at the Cooroy Sport Complex which is now the Noosa District
Junior Rugby League grounds.
The club appointed former Eastern Suburb's player Mick Plant as A'Grade Coach, a position he held through to 1977 when he led
the Noosa Pirates to take out that season's President's Cup and Premiership trophy.
Along with the Reserve grade giving the Pirates a double
celebration. In the early 1980's (around season 81-82), with the Noosa Pirates continued growth, the Pirates became as a real force to be reckoned with, in local league circles, The Pirates,
in a major move for its future, relocated the senior part of the club to what was then known as Pirate Park , today is better
known as Bartercard Oval Noosa Sports Complex Cooroy/Noosa Rd Tewantin. This gave the club a home base location in the centre
of the Noosa Shire.
Building from its youth, the Noosa Pirates took out the 1990 u/19's Premiership. Many of these players remained with the club
to continue on and play in A'Grade in future years. Growing from strength to strength, the club in season 1997, made a duel Grand Final
appearance once again with the "Pirates Reserve" Grade Runners-Up and the
A'Grade led by coach Terry Bullen taking out the season premiership.
As it had been 20 years since their last premiership win, massive crowds attended not only the match but one of the biggest after match
functions seen at the home of the club.
Many a character has come through the club, both in player and official capacities, with the club boasting a high level of
representative player participation for some years. To name a few-:
1. Mick Plant, what a coach! Mick can still be seen at many of the Pirates home matches and functions.
2. Life Member - Col Christensen! A real stalwart of the club, has been both a great player and and official. ( Ask him about
the last match he played!)
3. Viv Law, a tireless fund-raiser! and worker for the club.
4. In more modern times Shane Payne and Greg Christensen have lead the way, as long serving club players.
5. And that colourful character coach Terry Bullen - A Grade Premiership Coach 1997.
The list would see too many to mention but we can all be assured that the proud tradition of this club will see many more to
come.
With a 5 year Management/Development plan prepared and installed for the Noosa District Rugby League by Steve Woods with full
committee support, the Noosa Pirates were soon building a new "Multi Purpose Function
Centre" and this was completed and opened at the end of the 2000 season,. This modern facility has given new direction to the Pirates and offers for all home
games and community events and promotions one of the best facilities in the region. This encouraged a record number of Major
and support sponsors to come on board with support for the Pirates club and as the patronage of this new facility continues
to grow all this should see even further success and greatness come to the Pirates well into the future. The Noosa District
Rugby League currently leads the way in the Sunshine Coast and Gympie Rugby League with a (slogan) "Setting The Standard" the
Pirates now have in place a Junior Development Programs, Joint Higher Level Club Association (St.George/ILLawarra Dragons
NRL), a large data base of Major and Support corporate sponsors, Television and Radio media association, ensuring the Pirates continued promotion of the game of Rugby League will
encourage all to be part of this very exciting local league sporting club for years to come. |
